We’ve Not Decided On Calling Off The Strike Yet, The Government Rushed – UTAG

As announced by the Parliament’s select Committee of Education on Thursday 17th Febuary,2022, the Ranking Member of the Education Committee in Parliament, Hon. Peter Norstu-Kotoe said UTAG has agreed to call off its five weeks long strike and will announce the decision after consultation with members.

He said “After listening to the cases, we realized that there will be the need for more dialogue. We finally appealed as a committee to UTAG to call off the strike which they agreed in principle. We expect they call off the strike today and then continue with negotiation”

However, the President of the University Teachers Association of Ghana (UTAG), Dr. Solomon Nunoo said they only told the Committee that they need to discuss the resolutions of the meeting with their members and a decision will subsequently be taken by the National Executive Committee, speaking in an interview on Accra-based television station, Metro TV.

Meanwhile, the Labor Court Division 1 of the Accra High Court has placed an injunction on UTAG’s strike, directing the association to return to the negotiation table with the government.

It was expected that a day after the court ruling the lecturers would have returned to the lecture hall which did not happen. They rather decided to wait for a certified true copy of the court ruling before deciding on the next step.

The university teachers demand that the government restore the conditions of service agreed upon in 2012.
