Sri Lanka’s Economic Crises

Sri Lanka, an island nation in the Indian Ocean, is located between the Laccadive Sea in the West and the Bay of Bengal in the East. The island is situated about 30 km (19 mi) southeast of the southern coast of India. Sri Lanka consists of the main island and a number of smaller islands. Until 1972 the country was known as Ceylon.

Sri Lanka is facing its worst financial crisis in years. With foreign exchange reserves standing at a paltry $2.31 billion, the country is struggling to pay for critical imports including fuel, food and medicines. As the economic crisis worsens in Sri Lanka, two men have recently died waiting in queue for fuel.

Sri Lanka police said last week Sunday that; two men collapsed and died while waiting in separate queues to secure fuel amid skyrocketing prices leading to inflation. The men in their Seventy’s died while they were waiting for petrol and kerosene oil in two different parts of the country.

“One was a 70-year-old three-wheel driver who was diabetic and heart-pressure patient while the second was 72-year-old. Both had been waiting in line for about four hours for fuel oil.” The Police spokesman, Nalin Thalduwa narrated.

For weeks, people have been queuing up at pumps often for hours and the country has been under rolling power cuts as well.
