E-Levy returns to Parliament hours to SONA, gets passed without Minority

The Electronic Transactions Levy (E-Levy) Bill was back on Parliament’s agenda, barely a week after the Finance Minister failed to show up for questioning on the state of the economy.

On March 24, the Majority explained that Ken Ofori-Atta wrote to the House indicating that he will not be available because he was still gathering facts and data on the questions asked.

Later that day, the Minister held a press conference to outline new measures taken by the government to mitigate the economic downturn confronting the country.

The passage of the controversial E-levy Bill found expression in the Order Paper of Parliament yesterday.

Meanwhile, the speaker of Parliament, Alban Bagbin was back in the House and presided over the business of the day. Parliament was expected to debate the E-Levy but NDC MPs felt betrayed by the approach.

Therefore, the minority group (NDC MPs) staged a walked out in Parliament. However, the house still went on to pass the e-levy bill with only the Majority side of Parliament present.
